How To Get Christmas Bookings In 2020 (Even If Parties In Person Don’t Happen)

by Judith | Sep 22, 2020 | Hospitality & Events

In Christmases past you would have realistically expected to take as much money through the tills in the single month of December as you would in an entire quarter during the rest of the year. Yet in 2020, the continuously evolving coronavirus situation is seriously...

It's taken the most traumatic loss of my life in 2 It's taken the most traumatic loss of my life in 2023 to fully appreciate this...

JFDI! - just f***ing do it!

I won't go into the details about what 2023 has taken from me.

But this time last year, getting giddy about Christmas, little did I know within just 7 months later I'd have suffered the most agonising loss. 😢

And now, I'm putting on a brave face as I navigate my first Christmas in 20 years as me not we.

I dug deep to share a eulogy at his funeral in July, when I said:

"What's happened has served as a stark remimder we're all on borrowed time. And none of us knows when our credit's up."

Take last January. He declined joining a friend group on a crazy Butlin's weekender, because he was concerned about work during that period. I went and had a ball. I knew he'd love it too. So I re-booked on the spot for us both for 2024.

But, he wasn't to know his last chance had already been and gone.

Looking back, he should have JFDI!

Now, I love the end of the year period - not just because I turn into a Christmas princess every December and relish a Linda McCartney veggie sausage roll… 🎄

But because it’s the best opportunity to reflect and take in all the year has provided - from experiences and memories to wins and learnings.

And if 2023 has taught me anything (besides showing me I'm stronger than I ever imagined), it's not to sweat the small stuff.

JFDI!

Today, I challenge you to consider the one thing 2023 has really taught you this year and share it in the comments below 👇.

This could be a professional learning, a career win that taught you something new, or a life lesson.

The choice is yours!
If you want authentic, engaging and fun networking If you want authentic, engaging and fun networking, pitch slapping and business card thrusting isn't going to get you there. 😉

It's said:

"Christmas gifts, Christmas trees,
Christmas is the time to please"

This oH! oH! oH! so 'not networking' event is always atop my wish list. ✨️

The final first Tuesday of the month's Manchester Market Place by @by_parallel_events saw out 2023's schedule in style this lunchtime. 🎄

And wow, what a treat it was to devour carvery barms, roasties and mince pies over a cheeky game of Christmas bingo.

Thank you Jade Devaney at the lovely @maldronhotelmanchestercity for the warm welcome and even warmer mulled wine. 🍷

There's something special about wrapping up the year with a cracking bunch of regulars I'm proud to call genuine pals, folks who'd be there during the highs and lows of not just business but life in general too.

Plus, it's always great to welcome new co-conspirators to the fold.

Looking for networking in Manchester that delivers the merry? This might be the one to jingle your bells next year. 🔔

I believe we're kicking off on 6th February with bowling and banter at Lane 7. 🎳

What’s in and out on social media in 2024? IN ( What’s in and out on social media in 2024?

IN (or what should be IMHO):

→Profile videos - LinkedIn has recently removed one-minute profile videos a few years after they were introduced. Personally, I thought they were a simple but effective way of showing yourself and standing out. Perhaps it's coming back better next year. 🤞

→ Personalised connection requests - Pointing the finger at LinkedIn again, (because it's my main platform)... They've recently limited the personalisation of connection requests to as little as 10 per month for free accounts. Why, oh why? Another nail in the coffin of making genuine, intentional, non-spammy connections. Erase and rewind, please. 😣

→ Video shorts - Folks enjoy seeing your face and hearing your voice. It elevates you from static to three-dimensional. Truth bomb: Posey, staged stuff isn't necessary - and often unbecoming! ⚠

OUT (or what should be IMHO):

AI prompts - Isn't the whole purpose of enaging on social media to shine your authentic self? Is anybody else sick of mountains of instantly recognisable, passive, repetitive, inane suckiness? 🤖

Boast posts - Good for you if you're consistently smashing in £10K months. But, it's unstylish to be not so humbly bragging all over the socials about it, don't you think? There are better ways of conveying your hard won success, to attract not repel. 🤑

→ Being a pitch slapper - Here's a true story... I recently accepted a connection request. They were in my DMs in nanoseconds, simply saying, "Are you interested in forex trading?" My reply: "You didn't have me at hello, because you didn't even say hello". Delete. Sayonara, spammer. 👋

What would you add to my list?
Time for a re-intro for all my new followers... Hi Time for a re-intro for all my new followers... Hi, I’m Judith 👋

You can call me Jude or J or even JR, (I’ve heard that for years since Dallas days back in the ‘80s). But NOT Judy.

Let me share with you a little bit about me...

👉 My background was in local, regional and national sales roles for years in the hospitality, events and travel trade sectors for 25+ years.

👉 I took control of the uncontrollables during lockdown, to see if I could monetise my passion for writing. After all, I’d always been really annoyed with myself for taking so long to pursue it in a more meaningful way before.

👉 Now, I craft clear, personal, value rich and income generating words that shine during uncertain times… or at any time, boosting your awareness, engagement and sales.

So, if you’ve been following me for a while now you will have picked up a few things...
I live in sunny Manchester, Virgo, committed vegetarian and animal protectionist, a box set bingeing rock concert goer, who enjoys the occasional lager and lime. ♍🥕🤘🍺

Recently traumatically widowed, I’m navigating uncharted territory on my transitional journey from ‘we’ to ‘me’. 😢

My two children in furry jackets, Minnie and Nelson are my beloved besties and confidantes. 😻

I’m obsessed with Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers, who I’ve seen live over 50 times. 🎶

What you’ll also know is... I’m hell-bent on helping businesses transform their key messages and stories. And I want you to go from dull as dishwater to dazzling. 🚀

Yep… you heard me right!

You CAN have a website, online listings, sales copy, email marketing and social media channels you’re not only proud of, but generate results too.

This is where I come in. I’ve designed done-for-you and done-with-you content and copywriting and content marketing services I wish I’d had when I was in your shoes.
⠀
And I’ll help you resonate with your lapsed, existing and prospective target audiences to get your amazing products or services off the screen or page, and in to the hearts and baskets of your target audience.

That's me. Will you join me and share one thing about yourself in the comments? 👇
Today is a holiday that reminds us not to waste fo Today is a holiday that reminds us not to waste food AND content. Can you guess what it is?

You might be surprised it's National French Toast Day! 🍞

Yes, French Toast comes from a desire to not waste food. You can literally use any bread to make it.

So before you bin that week-old bread that's seen better days, perhaps you can turn it into a scrummy breakfast.

Likewise, before you bin your old content, why not think about revamping and repurposing it?

For example -

🍞Intermittently scatter evergreen content on loop in your content schedule

🍞Reuse any relevant (not lame!!!) days of the year content year on year? FYI I'm doing it right now. I also posted this post on 28.11.22

🍞Give your most popular content an encore or several

🍞Put a fresh spin on any of your existing content that's in the news right now or might have taken a new turn, for better or worse

It's 10X faster than continuously creating new content from scratch. Let's be honest, less time on the hamster wheel is just one benefit that makes repurposing worth its weight in gold.

And don't worry about an amount of repetition. We all assume everybody has seen our stuff. They haven't! Can you even remember all of your own blog posts and social media posts? Me neither.

Waste not, want not! I'm doing this. Who's with me?
Yes, I'm a copywriter and content marketer. But I Yes, I'm a copywriter and content marketer. But I might not be the copywriter and content marketer for you. Here's why... 🤔

Three common misconceptions people THINK I do in my job:

1️⃣Write or ghost write novels or edit books

2️⃣Write content and copy for ANYBODY about ANYTHING

3️⃣Read minds

Sorry to shatter the illusion, folks. After all, you know I'm a woman of both overt and hidden talents. But that doesn't include:

❌Anything to do with books just because I've got 'writer' in my JT

❌Crafting technical specs for new IT products or long form thought leadership articles about crytocurrency, (I mean really, can you see it?)

❌Translating your content pillars to resonate with your target audiences if you haven't defined your 'whys'

On the other hand, what about three ACTUAL things I do in my job?

✅Craft clear, effective, value rich words largely for hospitality and events businesses, with a liberal helping of HR, property, ISO, coaches, SaaS and pharma thrown in for good measure

✅Write website pages, blog posts, case studies, sales emails, press releases, LinkedIn profiles. Also 'done with you' polishing of existing and new text you've written yourself

✅Pen words with the specific purpose of getting your amazing products or services off the screen or page and into the hearts and baskets of your target audience. 💰

What do most people THINK you do all day?
5️⃣ of the most common mistakes if you want to 5️⃣ of the most common mistakes if you want to write client magnetising words - and what to do about them. ✍

Let's be honest. Having to sit there writing about your business can be soul destroying, especially if it's outside your area of expertise and your comfort zone. 😌

Worse still, it takes the biscuit when you've put in the sweat, only for your hard work to sink like a lead balloon. Jiminy Crickets!

But, fear not! As the song says, "Dry your eyes, mate".

Your friendly Mancunian copywriter to the rescue. 🦸‍♀️

I work with businesses of multiple shapes, sizes and sectors. But whatever their business type, and whatever their wordy needs, I've got to the stage of practically being able to predict where their past and existing efforts have/are falling down.

So I've compiled a list for your delectation:

❌5 of the most common copywriting clangers I come across every day
🚀Expert yet shockingly simple solutions you can put in to practice this second, to take your marketing messages from lame to lush

🎠Intrigued? Take a little ride on my carousel. And let me know in the comments which one resonates most with you. 👇
When witches go riding and black cats are seen, th When witches go riding and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers it’s Halloween 🎃

Time to get spooky, guys and ghouls.

With something for everybody to hang their witch's hat on, Halloween offers a macabre marketing spin, whether your business has direct creepy correlation or not.

Here's a true story...

My client specialises in fancy dress. This means Halloween marketing isn't just quirky and topical. It's business critical: a hefty chunk of their annual revenue.

But, the thought of writing blog posts to resurrect their website rankings gives them the chills.

I, on the other hand, had a fangtastic time producing a blood-curdling set of Halloween-themed SEO rich blog posts for their website, which they also rolled out via their social media marketing. 🧛‍♂️

They gave me carte blanche in terms of specific blog post topics. So I came up with pieces about -

👻Movie anti-heroes
👻Vampires in popular culture
👻The history of Halloween since the Celtic Feast of Sahmain
👻Terrifying tips for throwing a wicked Halloween party

Do you leverage Halloween for sales and marketing?
